🔦 Project Spotlight

In a major stride towards sustainable energy, the $312 million Summerville Solar Farm has been approved for construction in northern New South Wales. Located approximately 57 km southwest of Lismore, this expansive project is set to play a pivotal role in Australia's transition to renewable energy.

Key Features:

  • Scale & Capacity: Spanning 244 hectares, the farm will house 215,000 solar panels equipped with single-axis tracking systems, capable of generating 90 MW of electricity.

  • Energy Storage: A 360 MWh battery storage system will ensure consistent energy supply, enhancing grid reliability.

  • Environmental Impact: The project is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 139,000 tonnes annually, contributing significantly to climate change mitigation efforts.

  • Economic Benefits: Construction will create up to 200 jobs, with seven permanent positions once operational. Additionally, the Richmond Valley Council will receive $3.12 million for community and infrastructure developments.

Community Engagement & Concerns:
While the project promises substantial environmental and economic benefits, some local residents have expressed concerns regarding potential risks related to bushfires, flooding, and chemical safety, given the area's susceptibility to natural disasters. These concerns highlight the importance of comprehensive risk assessments and community engagement throughout the project's development.

Broader Context:
The Summerville Solar Farm is part of New South Wales' broader renewable energy initiatives, aiming to produce 6 GW and store 7.8 GW/21.5 GWh of energy, potentially offsetting 10.5 million tonnes of emissions annually. This project underscores the state's commitment to cleaner, more affordable energy solutions and positions the region as a leader in renewable energy adoption.

As construction progresses over the next 15–18 months, the Summerville Solar Farm will serve as a benchmark for future renewable energy projects, balancing technological advancement with community and environmental considerations.

👷‍♀️ On the Ground

Real movement. Real people. Real builds.

A wave of repatriated capital is flowing into Australian real estate as wealthy investors seek stability amid global economic uncertainties. Dubbed the "welcome home" stimulus, this influx is boosting construction activity, particularly in rental property developments. However, bureaucratic delays, especially in cities like Sydney, and a strained labour market are hindering progress. While developers like Meriton are securing construction permissions, many investors are shifting focus to cities like Melbourne, where land and planning approvals are more accessible

At the upcoming Community Cabinet in Townsville, North Queensland, local residents and business owners will discuss pressing regional issues with Premier David Crisafulli and Cabinet Ministers. A critical concern is the shortage of skilled construction workers and housing supply constraints. Mark Vaughan, Master Builders Queensland regional manager, will advocate for reducing red tape, increasing productivity on construction sites, and enhancing apprenticeship programs. Construction Skills Queensland’s Horizon 2032 report predicts a shortage of 50,000 construction workers by 2026-27.
